Deserving teams will be screwed out of playoffs

We can now officially label the Chargers the most disappointing team of 2008. It’s almost unbelievable that they’re 4-8, playing in one of the league’s creampuff divisions. Sure, they lost Shawne Merriman in the preseason; he’s good, but he’s not that good. I can’t believe they’re going to give away the division to a very suspect Denver team.

In the NFC North, I’m putting the Vikings down as the division champ, but I’m putting it in pencil. After beating Chicago tonight, the Vikings have the lead, but they also have by far the toughest remaining schedule. Their final three games are at Arizona, home against Atlanta and home against the Giants. Both the Packers and Bears have much easier schedules; the winner of the week 16 game between Chicago and Green Bay, I think, has a shot to win all four of its remaining games. So let’s not project the NFC North just yet.

I think that at the end of week 17, there will be some grumbling by teams. With wildly uneven divisions, there’s an excellent chance that multiple teams will be left out of the playoffs, despite finishing with better records than teams that will be in the postseason. According to our projections, in fact, the Patriots will win 10 games and be left out, while the Broncos will play at home in the first round of the playoffs despite winning only 9 games. The Patriots played in a harder division and clobbered the Broncos head-to-head – so how fair is that? There probably will be a 10-win team on the NFC side that’s left out as well (most likely Dallas or one of three teams in the NFC South), while there could be two division champs with 9 wins – maybe Arizona and the NFC North champ.

We will also definitely see, in both divisions, wild-card teams being forced to play on the road despite finishing with better records than division winners. No doubt about that.

Maybe it’s time, in other words, to take another look at this eight-division format. When you get enough four-team divisions, it’s only a matter of time before these kind of issues crop up.
