2008: a big year for tight ends

Posted Feb. 17 at 09:44 PM

As I’m pushing around some of the stats from the 2008 season, I notice that there were an unusually high number of productive tight ends.

Nine different players at that position either led their team in touchdown catches or shared the lead with another player. That hasn’t happened in the last 20 years. (And I doubt that it happened in the previous 20 years either.)

I would guess that the last time the league had a higher percentage of high-scoring tight ends would be 1993. There were eight team leaders that year, but the team had only 28 teams – so a higher percentage.

Tight ends who led their teams in touchdown receptions in 2008:
  TD
  10  Tony Gonzalez, K.C.
  8  Antonio Gates, S.D.
  7  Anthony Fasano, Mia.
  6  Kevin Boss, NYG
  5  John Carlson, Seattle
  5  Greg Olsen, Chi.

Tight ends who tied for their team’s lead in touchdown receptions in 2008:
  TD
  7  Visanthe Shiancoe, Minn.
  6  Dallas Clark, Ind.
  3  Kellen Winslow, Clev.
