Fantasy News
Top wide receiver prospect Michael Crabtree has looked like a surefire top-10 or top-5 pick; maybe he still will be (as we speculate below). If that happens, though, teams will be drafting him without seeing him perform at the NFL combine or a pro day at Texas Tech.
According to NFL.com's Adam Schefter, Crabtree has a stress fracture in his foot, and he'll need to have surgery to have a screw inserted. He'll reportedly be sidelined for a minimum of 10 weeks, which means the team that drafts him won't have him for minicamps, and might not have him 100 percent for the start of training camp.
Schefter's story can be seen right here. It's bad news for Crabtree, of course, and also for those with top picks in their dynasty drafts. Not that this injury should have any effect on Crabtree's career, but it's not a great start.
A year ago, Jonathan Stewart had foot surgery prior to the draft, and was still taken No. 13 overall by the Panthers. The injury didn't have much, if any, effect on his season; it's debatable whether it affected his draft position. With Crabtree, it might not either; perhaps a team sitting up there has him ranked so highly based on his talent that they'll take him anyway.
As a fantasy owner, I'm not so sure. Through a preseason trade I have the 2nd overall pick in my dynasty draft. I would absolutely have taken Crabtree with that pick a week ago. Now, depending on where players end up, maybe I'll be more likely to consider one of the top two running backs, Knowshon Moreno and Beanie Wells, instead.
