Underrated run defense: Bengals?

Posted Mar. 03 at 10:45 AM

Around here, we play around and compile a lot of our own stats. Short-yardage rushing. Rushing and passing inside the 10. Rushing and passing inside the 5. Team and individual numbers.

It’s useful for fantasy purposes, because stats and trends jump out at you.

Until this year, however, I had never attempted to compile the same numbers for defense. So I figured I’d take a lot at some of those numbers this morning.

Below, see the totaled numbers for rushing defense inside the 5-yard line. A couple of surprises in there. The Bengals, shockingly, despite having a poor season allowed only 6 yards on 24 carries when they were backed up onto their own goal line. And the Patriots, despite having major defensive problems, were very good at rushing defense at the goal line (only 4 TDs on 18 rushing attempts inside the 5).

The worst goal-line run defenses: Houston, Buffalo, Kansas City.

Below are the totaled numbers …
