Celek should be very good

Posted Mar. 29 at 08:39 AM

I like Brent Celek, the young tight end who’s now going to be a starter for Philadelphia.

I don’t think the Eagles are going to miss L.J. Smith at all. Having Smith sign with Baltimore, in fact, just makes it more likely that Celek is going to be one of the breakout players at the tight end position.

Look at what Celek did last year in his six starts (Smith had some injuries, then the Eagles just promoted Celek ahead of him during their playoff run).

at Chicago
3 catches, 21 yards

at Seattle
6 catches, 131 yards

vs. Dallas
3 catches, 30 yards, 1 TD

at Minnesota
6 catches, 56 yards

at New York Giants
3 catches, 12 yards, 1 TD

at Arizona
10 catches, 83 yards, 2 TD

That those numbers, project them over a 16-game season, and it works out to 83 catches, 888 yards and 10.6 TDs. I’m not saying Celek is going to hit those kind of statistical levels, but I think he’s going to outproduce where he’s selected in virtually every fantasy draft this year. Very good chance to be a top-5 tight end.

We’ll see how the drafts and auctions go. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t on over half of my teams.
