Factoid
One of Mike Singletary’s first decisions as San Francisco’s head coach was to fire offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
Good move.
Martz is an aggressive play-caller whose teams consistently rank among the leaders in passing production, but he also takes way too many chances. In his offense, the quarterback is asked to hang onto the ball longer while deep pass patterns develop, and that tends to result in more sacks, fumbles and interceptions.
Check out the numbers below, which show the tabulated stats since Martz was named the head coach of the Rams in 2000. Over that nine-year span, Martz’s offenses (with the Rams, Lions and 49ers) have been the worst in all three of those categories.
San Francisco’s offensive coordinator this year will be Jimmy Raye, and the team is going to a more conservative scheme, with more of an emphasis on the running game and protecting the football.
