Fanex: playing it safe

Posted May. 20 at 10:20 AM

I decided to go safe with my last two picks in the Fanex Draft.

At the end of the fifth round and start of the sixth, I selected LenDale White and Cedric Benson. I don’t consider either of those guys to be superstars (they don’t catch passes, which hurts them in this format), but I think they’re both pretty good bets to play 16 games, and this is a no-moves league – often times, it’s just a battle of attrition.

Also, I kind of like both players. White is in a contract year and appears to be in very good shape. With a much more favorable schedule this year, I think he’ll be a steady producer. And Benson is a full-time back; only Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner had more rushing attempts, believe it or not, in the second half of last season.

To select these guys, I passed on Dallas Clark – the top tight end on my board and the highest-rated player on my board. That hurts, but I am confident I can get a couple of good tight ends later in the draft. I know there will be good value at tight end later; I do not know that there will be good value at other positions in that same range.

Overview of rules: Each team drafts 20 players. Starts QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, K, D and one flex player (RB-WR-TE). 6 points for TDs, 4 for TD passes, 1 for every 20 passing yards, 1 for every 10 run/rec yards, 1 for every reception. No free agent pickups – what you draft is what you get. No starting lineups – lineups tabulated via “best ball” methods. No head-to-head games; highest total points after 17 weeks is the winner.

Starting to change your view on Lendale, Ian? Wasn't that you who told me you hated him and his touchdown dance "The Showcase"? I too seem to have a softspot for USC runningbacks..seems I'll be keeping him and Bush this year. I like the move, you can always get a TE like Owen Daniels later.

I don't like White. I hate the "Showcase". But this is business -- I'm trying to win some ballgames, and I think White will help me.

IMHO, 3.10 WR Marques Colston (Rito) is by-far the steal of the draft

I think you may have a problem this year vs Dolfi. You have Ben,He has Aaron, you have Bush,he has Peterson, you have Ochio,he has Roddy White, you do have Steve Smith which in my oppinion is your best,he has Ronnie Brown who could be huge, you have Benson and white he has J Jones which is a small plus for you.Over all I think he has better team so far.

Aaron Rodgers is a nice player, but can he stay healthy? This is a no-moves league. If I were him, I'd be looking to pick up another competent quarterback. And I'm not worried at all about Ronnie Brown. He could lose a lot of his Wildcat looks to second-round Pat White.
