Fanex: adding a fifth running back

Posted May. 23 at 12:13 AM

I managed to sneak in pick 9.11 before they turned off the timer for the Memorial Day weekend.

Decided to go with Leon Washington. I like him. He catches a lot of passes – 47 last year – and this is a PPR format. I also think he’ll take on a bigger role this season. The way Thomas Jones is grumbling about his contract, I’m not even positive he’ll be back. Jones also turns 31 in August. Washington has averaged over 5 yards per carry two years in a row; he needs to play more.

With Washington, I think I have a nice five-man mix at running back (and remember, this is a no-moves league, with starting lineups determined on a best-ball basis). I’ve got a pair that look like pretty safe bets to start 16 games – LenDale White and Cedric Benson – and then I’ve got three smaller guys who might all catch 50-plus passes (Reggie Bush, Ray Rice, Washington). With those five, I think I’ll be able to make it through the 17-week season in reasonable shape. On some Sunday, I expect my No. 3 running back to fill the “Flex” position in this league.

Overview of rules: Each team drafts 20 players. Starts QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, K, D and one flex player (RB-WR-TE). 6 points for TDs, 4 for TD passes, 1 for every 20 passing yards, 1 for every 10 run/rec yards, 1 for every reception. No free agent pickups – what you draft is what you get. No starting lineups – lineups tabulated via “best ball” methods. No head-to-head games; highest total points after 17 weeks is the winner.
