Fanex: late-round trade

Posted May. 28 at 12:46 PM

I do make some trades in these Fanex drafts. I should probably make an effort to explore more of them, but I don’t have the time. Last year, I traded all of my first three or four picks (moving down), and it worked out very well.

This year, I traded down out of the first round but didn’t bother trying to move the other high ones.

But I’ve just completed a rare late-round swap. I gave up pick 13.11 and all of my remaining even-numbered round picks (14.02, 16.02, 18.02) to Matt Pitzer of the USA TODAY for choice 12.10 and his remaining picks in the even-numbered rounds (14.10, 16.10, 18.10).

So basically, I got a round of draft position now and gave up almost a round of draft position in three later rounds.

Ahmad Bradshaw is the player I wanted. I have five other running backs, but I think Bradshaw will be very good. He’ll be the Giants’ No. 2 running back, and Derrick Ward ran for over 1,000 yards and caught 41 passes in that role last year. I think Bradshaw can do some of those same kind of things. He’s a much better receiver than Brandon Jacobs, so I believe he’ll probably play on passing downs and catch about 40 passes. And I don’t think Jacobs, as a tall, physical back, has any chance of playing 16 games.

On my board, I’ve got Bradshaw with a higher grade than 15 running backs who were already selected. So I felt like he was a guy worth sacrificing to go after. I’ve got plenty of other runners, of course, but with the flex you can use three each week. I imagine Bradshaw will play well enough to score in some weeks for this team.

Overview of rules: Each team drafts 20 players. Starts QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, K, D and one flex player (RB-WR-TE). 6 points for TDs, 4 for TD passes, 1 for every 20 passing yards, 1 for every 10 run/rec yards, 1 for every reception. No free agent pickups – what you draft is what you get. No starting lineups – lineups tabulated via “best ball” methods. No head-to-head games; highest total points after 17 weeks is the winner.

I love this stuff as much as anyone, but when things get this far along I find that I don't care anymore. Sorry, but these drege's just aren't interesting.

Duane. I'm hurt. I'm trying to share knowledge here. I'm trying to help you. Who were the two players I selected in the last round of this draft last year? Chris Perry (who was a starting running back for the first half of the season) and Pierre Thomas.

Posted by Duane Stay | May. 29 at 06:21 PM

I guess I wasn't paying attention last year. Pierre Thomas was an excellent pick. I'm humbled.

Bradshaw's a great pick, Delhomme, C.Chambers and L.Maroney are all absolute steals.

Posted by IAN ALLAN | May. 29 at 09:52 PM

You'll have to explain to me why Maroney is a steal. They have Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris there, and all of those guys are going to play. Maroney won't be there goal-line guy. He's caught 4 passes in the last two years (this is a PPR league, so when a RB catches 1 pass for 10 yards, it's 2 points -- when he runs for 10 yards, it's 1 point). What, exactly, is it that you expect Maroney to do?

Posted by Eugene Hitt | May. 30 at 10:07 AM

Maroney was and is the only RB that Bill has selected in the 1st round. With that being said he has never been beaten for the top spot on the depth chart in training camp. With the revelation that he played last year with the same injury that put Rashard Mendenhall on IR and the fact that this is a contract year for him, I think its realistic that he has the ability and motivation to take control of that situation. Any RB that has received the lions share of carries in that offense has been a fantasy starter and he is far and away there most expolosive RB. Getting a guy with that kind of potential in the 13th round of a no trade league seems like a pretty good pick to me. Would he have been better off attempting to handcuff Forte or taking a flyer on a lesser RB in a lesser offense?

I'm not knocking the Maroney pick. 13th round is about right for him. But I don't see him as a standout pick. In regards to what the guy should have done have done at running back, you can see what I did in the earlier rounds. I like where I got Benson, LenDale and Ray Rice.

Heath milleer will probably be your starter.
