Is it time to get rid of extra points?
The success rate has gotten too high. I was just swapping e-mails with a guy who's considering incorporating missed extra points into a fantasy product. He asked that I run the numbers on extra points.
2006 -- 1124 of 1134
2007 -- 1165 of 1177
2008 -- 1170 of 1176
That works out to 99.5 percent accuracy for last year. Is there a more boring play in sports?
I say either move extra points back to about 30 or 35 yards, or just get rid of them entirely. The only reason to potentially keep them is tradition -- "that's the way it's always been done" -- but that doesn't float with me. If they were designing the game today, would extra points make the cut? Absolutely no way.
The success rate on field goals of 30 to 39 yards last year was 89 percent.

I remember in the 90's how exciting it was when they brought the 2 point play to the NFL. We used to root for our guys to go for 2 every play. Didn't Tom Tupa score the first 2 pointer....and wasn't he a punter/holder?

As I recall, it was Bill Belichick's Browns playing at Cincinnati -- at Riverfront. I think it was the first week of the season. Probably the first touchdown scored by Cleveland, and they had Tupa take the snap, then quickly jump up and run it in.

In Cleveland they used to have "Beavis and Belichick" signs. Now he is widely considered one of the most brilliant coaches we've seen in a long time. Who woulda thought?
