Northcutt to Lions

Posted Jun. 26 at 09:02 PM

It's not a huge trade, but then again, Dennis Northcutt's move to the Lions yesterday stands a chance to give him fantasy relevance he wasn't going to have in Jacksonville.

In both places, Northcutt figures to work as a slot receiver. But on Jacksonville, a team that should have a strong running game and have an improved defense over last year, that player might not make much of an impact. He also wasn't even certain to get that job -- Jacksonville is going with Torry Holt and Mike Walker as starters, and likes rookie Mike Thomas as well.

Detroit's situation at wide receiver is as shaky (if not more so) as Jacksonville's. After Calvin Johnson, they've got virtually nothing: Bryant Johnson, who flopped in San Francisco last year; Ronald Curry, whose last relevance in Oakland was two years ago; and third-rounder Derrick Williams. Indeed, Northcutt's chances of being a No. 2 look slightly better in Detroit.

Not to get too crazy about it -- he's not suddenly a fantasy starter. Still, Northcutt did close last year on a roll, catching 18 passes for 263 yards and 2 TDs in the final three games. He may also return punts in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press's story on the trade can be seen right here.
