IDPs gaining popularity?

Posted Jul. 13 at 06:02 AM

I've received two invites to join experts leagues featuring IDPs -- individual defensive players -- in the last week. This in itself doesn't mean that suddenly they're becoming widespread in fantasy circles, but it's a positive sign.

A couple of years ago we polled readers as to how many of them used IDPs in their fantasy leagues, rather than the more traditional team defenses. The percentages were somewhat smaller than 1 in 10. Later this week I'll throw up a poll to see how much (if at all) those numbers have changed. It makes sense, though, that as the popularity of fantasy leagues continues to grow, more and more people will look for new twists to put on their leagues.

Starting this afternoon I'll be participating in an extended-format experts draft that includes IDPs -- six of each lineup's 15 starters will be defensive players. I'm curious to see when the first IDP will be selected (definitely earlier than any team defense would be), and how other experts handle their rosters.

I've got our rankings and a pretty good idea of who the best players will be in this scoring system, which gives 1 point for tackles, 0.5 points for assists, 3 points for sacks and fumble recoveries, 4 points for interceptions and forced fumbles, and 6 points for all touchdowns.

If you want to follow along, the draft, sponsored by Fantasy Football Indepth, can be seen at this link. Given the extended format, it might be a couple of days before any IDPs are selected, though I guess you never know.

I'll post occasional draft updates here, and on our new Twitter page (http://www.twitter.com/FantasyIndex), as the draft moves along.
