We're into the 12th round of the Fantasy Football Indepth experts draft I've been participating in this week, which is the time for longshot rookies and also IDPs. I just selected my first one -- Justin Tuck, who we've ranked as the No. 2 defensive end -- and may take another in a few picks.
Again I'm struck by how much depth there is at the quarterback position this year. Carson Palmer in the 10th round and Ben Roethlisberger in the 11th? There's little reason to draft a quarterback early this season.
With IDPs, I've got a few linebackers ranked higher than Tuck. But he's one of a handful of defensive lineman who not only has a shot at 10-12 sacks but also will post respectable tackle numbers, which makes him very valuable in this particular scoring format. There are only a few more elite-type linebackers left, and I'll consider one with my next pick. After that, there's a great deal of similarity between the remaining defensive prospects at end and linebacker.
Sometimes I draft based on my expectations of other people's rankings. I wanted to get 2 good tight ends, and I selected Dustin Keller ahead of some players we've ranked higher -- because I think he'd have been taken earlier by another expert. I'll get my second option, who we've probably ranked higher than Keller, in a round or two.
