I’ve already got a nice one-two punch at tight end. I’m set at that position.
But here we are at the end of the 14th round, and there are two teams in this deal that haven’t selected a tight end. This is a point-per-reception league, so if you get a tight end who catches 60-plus balls, they’re a nice asset.
With that in mind, I’m using not only pick 14.11 but also pick 15.02 to remove the final two top-level tight ends from the board – Jeremy Shockey and Vernon Davis. I can’t let these other owners get players of that caliber at this point in the draft. It’s unconventional. It’s zig when others say zag, but it feels right to me.
And I don’t consider this to be just a move of trying to make things tough on others. Shockey and Davis might both be better than the two tight ends I selected earlier – Heath Miller and Brent Celek. Shockey played only about 10 games worth of action last year and caught 50 passes. He could go over 70 catches easy. And Davis appears to be vastly improved for the 49ers.
Back at pick 13.02, I was torn whether to select Miller, Shockey or Davis as my second tight end. I actually tried to trade up to select one of those players before the end of the 13th round. Now I’ve got them both.

Fanex is a 24-team league that's set up like European soccer. Top 12 seeds, based on past performance, are in the American League. Other 12 are in the National League. Each year, the bottom four teams in the American League are replaced by the top four in the National. Each league has a separate winner. Overall champion of the Fanex is considered to be the winner of the American League.

I think that you have Shockey undervalued. Even with his "disaster" of a season last year he still caught 50+ passes with a hernia that bothered him the entire season. Now, he has had a full offseason to work with Brees, and he is looking incredible. Of course it always comes down to health with Shockey, but is he really much more of a liability than Dallas Clark and his concussions? I say that you pass on Clark who typically goes in the 5th round of a 10-12 team league, and get Shockey who goes five round later. I can honestly see 80 catches, 1000 yards, and 8 TDs out of him. He isn't the safest TE...but he has the best upside in my opinion.

I like your team Ian. Thanks a lot for sharing your picks and rationale. IMHO, drafting strategy (when and why) is where many of us fantasy vets have the best opportunity to continue learning from you. I'm curious to see how you round out your RB corps. A safe handcuff or a youngster with potential or both? For what it's worth, a quote from C. Palmer a week or so ago, ”I like him a lot. I think he’s going to be really good. He’s going to be a good change of pace with the kind of big bruiser Cedric is but Bernard has a lot of speed. … He’s been the star so far of all the rookies. He’s made the most plays and dropped the most jaws.” Best of luck with the rest of the draft!

I was looking at Bernard Scott, but he's gone. I'm not sure I'll draft anymore running backs. I still need to select at least one kicker and one defense. Moves are allowed in this league, so I may pick up a running back off the waiver wire during the season. With the four tight ends and six good wide receivers, a trade is also a possibility.
