Loose coverage on tight ends

Posted Nov. 12 at 09:59 PM

Antonio Gates and Brent Celek are two of the NFL's most productive tight ends. In week 10, with their teams facing each other, they also get two of the league's best matchups for the position.

Since the start of last season, the Chargers have allowed a league-high 16 touchdowns to tight ends. The Eagles are one of seven teams who have allowed 10 TDs since the start of last season, which is 3rd-worst behind the Chargers and Falcons. An especially good week, then, to get either Celek or Gates into a lineup.

The numbers of touchdowns allowed to tight ends by each team over the past season and a half are presented below.

TDs    Team
16        San Diego
15        Detroit
10        Philadelphia

Andy: What do you think about adding Lance Long in a 12 team ppr league. I would cut James Jones to acquire him. My other wr's are Welker, S. Smith (NYG), Cotchery and Wallace. I'm seeing him touted all over and Haley and Cassell are comparing him to Welker as a slot receiver. Pretty high praise. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Peter - I'd make that move. I know Jones has scored in three of four or something, but he's not a huge part of the offense, and Long *could* be. I picked him up in a dynasty league myself this week. Keep in mind, I wouldn't necessarily throw him into a lineup this week. Long remains the No. 3 in a passing offense that has little in common with the one Welker plays in -- he won't catch 8 balls every week. But Jones isn't getting a ton of targets, and Jordy Nelson is probably only a week or so away from returning. A month from now, maybe Long is continuing to catch 4-5 balls per week in the slot while Jones is sharing the No. 3 role. Still though, I wouldn't get too crazy about Long, but I think he has more potential than Jones, who really needs either Jennings or Driver to get hurt to really be a reliable weekly play.
