Watch the playoffs as a fan

Posted Jan. 05 at 05:00 AM

With NFL coaches being canned as part of a bizarre pre-playoffs ritual, you should appreciate a big difference between NFL and fantasy football. You don't have to start thinking about next year today. Sure, Buffalo and Washington are putting the pieces together for 2010. Teams are already collecting huge dossiers on the prospective draft class. As soon as their attention leaves this season, it's time to think about next season.

Just don't to that as a fantasy owner.

I think the worst thing you can do is relive your mistakes and try to "correct" them eight months before next season starts. You'll definitely learn from your setbacks and try to do a better job next season. But we still have the rest of this season -- you know, the NFL playoffs. This is their weeks 15 and 16. This is the why they've been playing so hard in the first place. It would be a shame to focus on next year and miss the fun of the NFL playoffs.

I'm sure you'll watch, but I encourage you to watch and not think about fantasy football. Sure, you can play in a playoffs league for some fun, but put your main league out of your head entirely. Don't think about what went wrong -- or right -- last season. Try to enjoy the playoffs, even if your favorite team isn't playing.

The NFL pretends there are great matchups every year, but we know that isn't always the case. This year, however, the playoffs look unpredictable. Would you be surprised if the Eagles beat Dallas? Would it shock you if the Packers defeated the Cardinals? How about the Ravens beating the Welker-less Patriots? Are you sure the Bengals will beat the Jets? And that's just the first round. Who thinks the one-time 13-0 Saints are a lock for the Super Bowl? Who is convinced that San Diego can't beat the once 14-0 Colts in Indianapolis? Probably nobody, and that's why you should be watching.

And when I say "watching," I mean watching as a football fan who wants to see some great games. Don't worry about next season, who you're going to take with your first-round pick or what you could have done differently two months ago. Just sit down and enjoy the games, just like you did before the statistics meant so much.

I think NFL owners and coaches should take a break after the season as well, but they probably won't. They'll be working hard during the playoffs, focusing on how to get there themselves. And if they get there, they'll dissect game film when they lose in an attempt to correct mistakes for next year. It never ends. But this is another advantage of playing fantasy football. Not only are you assured a contract extension, but you can sit back and watch football. I suggest you just enjoy the matchups this weekend and look forward to…the following weekend, when the playoffs continue. As a fantasy owner, you've earned a nice break and a spot on the couch. Take advantage of it.
