Brett Favre's retirement uncertainty during the last few years of his career in Green Bay probably played a role in the team's decision to move on without him. It doesn't appear that the Vikings will be so impatient.
In an article in today's Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Minnesota VP of player personnel Rick Spielman says that the team wants to have Favre back, and "will go ahead and let him decide what he wants to do." The article can be seen right here.
Any trade rumors involving Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb will probably include the Vikings, as head coach Brad Childress worked with McNabb for years in Philadelphia. But Spielman said he doesn't think Favre's decision will influence the team's moves at the position, which at least suggests the Vikings won't make a play for a top veteran quarterback.
While Favre may announce his retirement in the next few weeks, there will be some question as to the decision's permanence until well into the summer. It seems more likely the Vikings would look to draft a quarterback of the future, and let Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson battle things out again in the preseason should Favre elect not to return.
