The Raiders have given Sebastian Janikowski a big new contract -- $16 million for four years, with $7 million guaranteed.
That’s a lot of money for a kicker, and probably too much for Janikowski. He ranks among the leaders in kickoff distance every year and was great in 2009, but he’s definitely been a disappointment since the Raiders selected him in the first round (just before Shaun Alexander, and Keith Bulluck was later selected in that first round).
Despite being very accurate last year (26 of 29), Janikowski nevertheless over the last four years has been the 2nd-least accurate kicker in the league among guys with at least 100 attempts (see chart below).
So his contract no doubt has caught the attention of the other kickers who’ll be free agents this season. Jeff Reed, Neil Rackers, Shayne Graham. All have been more accurate than Janikowski, and more than a few teams were plagued by lesser kicking last season.
