Eagles to release Westbrook

Posted Feb. 23 at 04:28 AM

Another day, another former franchise running back on the street. The Eagles are set to release veteran Brian Westbrook, according to a story at philadelphiaeagles.com.

Unlike LaDainian Tomlinson, who had clearly lost a step over the past two years, Westbrook might still be attractive to some teams as a starting running back. Westbrook is 30 years old, just a few months younger than Tomlinson, but he doesn't have quite the mileage on his tires that Tomlinson does. He does, however, carry more of a health risk, after various injuries and concussions limited him in his final season in Philadelphia. He entered last season coming off knee and ankle surgeries, and finished it on the sideline after suffering two concussions.

Should Westbrook fail to find a starting job, perhaps he'll land a role as a third-down back with a team like the Vikings, who may not be able to retain Chester Taylor, and whose coach, Brad Childress, is familiar to Westbrook from his time on Andy Reid's coaching staff.
