At quarterback, there’s no substitute for experience. The younger guys just aren’t ready to play.
Look at the chart below. It shows the frequency of turnovers (the number of interceptions and lost fumbles divided by the number of times a quarterback either attempted to pass or run the ball). For this kind of statistic, the lower the number the worse a guy did.
Three of the worst four were the three rookies – Josh Freeman, Mark Sanchez and Matthew Stafford. Those guys simply gave up the ball too often. The best quarterbacks, meanwhile, tended to be the veterans, with Brett Favre averaging 64 plays per turnover (so he was over three times better than any of the rookies).
