Nice guys finish first

Here’s one from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not File. Do you have any idea which running back in the league has been the best at converting third-and-one over the last two years? (Two years in a row, in fact.)

If I gave you 50 guesses, you still wouldn’t get it.

Lousaka Polite of the Dolphins – the fullback they use as a change-up pitch in those situations.

In 2008, Polite went 9 of 10 when the team went to him when it needed 1 yard (to convert either a third- or fourth-down, or to punch in a touchdown at the goal-line). That ranked No. 1 among all running backs with at least 10 attempts.

And he was even better last year. They went to him on 16 of those plays, and he converted every time.

That’s 25 of 26 over the last two years – 96 percent. Very impressive.

Not that Polite is going to help you win your fantasy league next year. Most of those carries were of the change-up variety, with defenses looking for either Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams. But it’s still an impressive figure. League-wide, team converted 68 percent of those kind of plays last year.
