The Seahawks haven't made a big splash yet in free agency, but they're one of the more interesting teams to watch. They're under new management, and they've got two of the top 14 picks in the draft to work with (via trading their second-rounder to Denver last year).
Seattle has been kicking the tires on Brandon Marshall. They could trade one of their first-round picks to get him.
There also are rumblings that they might want to trade for one of Philadelphia's quarterbacks -- they could be interested in Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb.
They have Matt Hasselbeck, of course. He led them to a Super Bowl appearance not too long ago.
But the Seahawks have a new coaching staff now, and Hasselbeck will be 35 in September. More importantly, his play has dipped the last two years.
I was just working on compiling some stats for the magazine. As the numbers were going by, I noticed that Hasselbeck, at least statistically, has been the league's worst quarterback over the last 2 years on passing inside the 5-yard line.
His stats (for inside the 5 in 2008-2009):
6 of 25, 6 TDs, 2 interceptions, 1 sack.
That's 24 percent passing in that part of the field.
The Seahawks may be looking to replace him.
In hindsight, Seattle sure would have loved to have selected Mark Sanchez in the draft last year. Not that Aaron Curry won't be a good linebacker, but Seattle had a chance to nail down the quarterback position with Sanchez.

I like the idea of the Hawks trading for a solid back-up QB and riding Hasselbeck for another year or two. Ideally, they draft Jake Locker in 2011 and he becomes their QB of the future. Locker's already in Seattle, of course, but he may be a top 5 Draft pick next year if he has a good 2010 season at UW.

Kolb will be a great sleeper pick, if he starts for the Birds in 2010. Reid knows QBs, and he is very high on Kolb. He looked great in the games he appeared in last year, and Reid is a passing addict.

I believe coaches play a huge role in the development and success of a quarterback. The first three picks of the 1999 draft were all quarterbacks -- Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith. Had McNabb been selected by Cleveland or Cincinnati, I'm not sure he would have had much of a career. So I agree with David. If Kolb winds up starting for Philadelphia, I think he'll be very good.
