Around the NFL
New Cleveland decision-maker Mike Holmgren said last month that he doesn't like quarterback competitions. Maybe what he meant was that he just didn't like quarterback competitions between the quarterbacks he had on his roster.
A week ago the Browns' depth chart featured Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. Since then they've cut Anderson and added Seneca Wallace via trade and Jake Delhomme in free agency. Delhomme agreed to a two-year deal, according to this story at ESPN.com. Apparently the chance to start for lowly Cleveland was more appealing to Delhomme than possibly backing up Drew Brees with the Super Bowl champion Saints.
In all likelihood, Quinn will be traded away in the next few days. Bringing in both Wallace and Delhomme doesn't suggest Holmgren sees much of a future in the youngster. Most likely the Browns will draft somebody, who they develop slowly behind whoever wins the Wallace-Delhomme competition.
As for that one, don't assume it will be Delhomme. The veteran looked pretty much toast last season, and Cleveland's offensive system will be one that Wallace is much more familiar with. Plus he might simply be better than Delhomme right now.
