Clausen looking like a top-5 pick

Posted Mar. 27 at 06:47 AM

A year ago two quarterbacks, Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez, went in the draft's top 5 picks. It's looking like that will probably happen again, with Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen.

As this story on NFL.com indicates, five of the teams picking in the top 10 have scheduled interviews with the Notre Dame quarterback. The teams are St. Louis, Washington, Cleveland, Buffalo and Jacksonville.

Most believe that St. Louis will take Sam Bradford, the consensus top quarterback in the draft. However, they'll likely negotiate with both players, and perhaps one of the two top defenders, to avoid overpaying for whoever they end up selecting.

Assuming they do end up taking Bradford, things could get interesting, with teams jockeying for position in the top few picks to get Clausen, the only other definite first-round quarterback in the draft. There's currently talk that Tim Tebow might also draw interest in the first round, but likely not as high as Clausen will go.

Both of the top quarterbacks are coming off surgery, Bradford on his shoulder and Clausen on his foot (in January). That's less likely to be an issue for potential landing spots than Bradford's shoulder.

In Cleveland, Washington or Jacksonville, Clausen most likely wouldn't be required to start in 2010, although there'd certainly be speculation. In Buffalo, he'd probably have a decent shot to be the next Mark Sanchez: beating out mediocre competition to start from Day 1.

Assuming he doesn't end up in Jacksonville, the question would then be whether the Jaguars consider Tebow at the No. 10 spot. If they're interested in the former Florida star, Jacksonville couldn't hope Tebow made it into the next round, since they don't have a second-round pick.
