Factoid
Maurice Jones-Drew hasn’t been quite as effective in short-yardage as I would have expected. He had an excellent run at the goal line two years ago, scoring on 8 of 9 carries from either the 1- or 2-yard line. But his overall body of work isn’t as impressive.
Looking solely at situations where one yard is needed to either score or keep a drive alive (on third or fourth down):
2007: 16 of 27
2008: 12 of 17
2009: 13 of 24
Jones-Drew, in other words, was in the bottom 20 percent in both 2007 and 2009. He was average in 2008.
GOAL-LINE RUSHING (1- or 2-yard line)
2007: 12 carries, 0 yards, 3 TDs
2008: 9 carries, 12 yards, 8 TDs
2009: 10 yards, 1 yard, 3 TDs.
So Jones-Drew was outstanding in 2008, but he’s been poor in his other two recent seasons, with his 22 carries generating a grand total of 1 yard and 6 TDs.
Seems to me that the Jaguars might want to work in youngster Rashad Jennings for some of those plays. Not that he’ll be a lot better, but he could be just as good, and it would be a way to ease some of the workload off Jones-Drews.
