Factoid
The two Super Bowl teams, oddly, are the two teams that have attempted the fewest field goals over the last four years. Both Indianapolis and New Orleans have tried only 103 field goals in the last four years.
This is unusual. Both teams have good offenses. Usually, you expect to see the league’s worst teams attempting the fewest field goals. (Certainly, the worst teams score the fewest kicking points – the Colts and Saints both pile up a lot of extra points).
In this case, it really comes down to both New Orleans and Indianapolis being very good at scoring touchdowns, rather than settling for field goals. Two other teams, over the last four years, also have averaged over 26 points per game. They also rank outside the top 10 in field goal attempts (though just outside). That would be San Diego and New England.
