Fantasy News
If I’m going to do well in the Fanex League this year, it will have to be with a new strategy. In each of my other three years in this league, I’ve done well by stockpiling blue-chip wide receivers.
This is a PPR league, and you also have a flex player (and start 3 WR anyway), so if you can get a bunch of receivers who’ll catch 80-plus passes and 8 TDs, you win. So while others have keyed on running backs early in the past, I’ve instead drafted wide receivers, and in my three years have finished 1st, 1st and 2nd.
But others are giving wide receivers more respect this season. I traded away pick 1.04, giving me four of the eight picks at the end of the second and start of the third, but the top 9 wide receivers (the guys I was hoping to select about three of) were all gone by the time I made my first pick.
So I’ve switched gears. I picked up a pair of running backs at 2.09 and 3.01. Rashard Mendenhall and Knowshon Moreno. Not great players, but the kind of backs who in the past would have been long gone.
And I traded down a couple more times. I traded away pick 2.12 to move down to 3.03, changing pick 17.04 into 11.03. That one kind of backfired, because it cost my Peyton Manning. And I traded away pick 3.03, moving to the bottom of round 3 but moving up 8 spots in each of the next three even-numbered rounds – 4, 6 and 8. So maybe that creates some extra value.

It seems to me that the one thing you could do regarding WR is to find the guy you believe could take a leap forward in 2010, like Michael Crabtree or Hakeem Nicks. That, and grab a really good TE!

The draft made it to the end of the round with three more proven veteran receivers available -- Greg Jennings and the two Steve Smiths. I went with the double Smiths at 3.12 & 4.01. Maybe a young WR or TE at pick 5.04.

I am very surprised by the 8th overall pick: Ryan Matthews. Could anyone offer me some insight?

He'll be the starting running back in San Diego. Runs and catches. Good offense. Could run for about 1,000 yards and 12 TDs, and might catch 30-40 passes. Higher than I would have taken him, though.

In the experts draft I ran on Saturday, he went 23rd overall, and was the 12th running back taken. That is probably closer to where he will go in most leagues, I think.

Heh, two Steve Smiths! That may not be such a bad 1-2 tandem, actually, I'm feeling a rebound from Carolina Smith now that he has a QB who won't turn the ball over three times a game.
