Fantasy News
As this Fanex draft drags on, I just got caught in a squeez play by Matt Pitzer of USA Today. He just leveraged a 12th-round pick out of me in exchange for Fred Jackson.
I’ve drafted three running backs – Mendenhall, Moreno and Spiller. My intention is to pick up the handcuffs for maybe all three backs, ensuring in this no-moves league that I’ll at least have a live body at the running back positions for all 17 weeks. I tend to go that route, rather than selecting six unconnected running backs, hoping that the backups of other teams are healthy when you need them.
I figured pick 11.03 would be plenty early for Fred Jackson. There are another 10 backs that are higher on my board, including Clinton Portis and Darren Sproles. So at pick 10.09, I addressed the backup quarterback spot, drafting Vince Young (not a guy I wanted, by the way, it just kind of worked out that way).
But before I could unload my picks at 11.03 and 11.04, Pitzer selected Jackson. Why, I have no idea. I considered ignoring this; maybe go ahead and select Portis or Sproles. But I’m a handcuff believer in this format, so I offered pick 11.03 for Jackson with a swap of 18th- and 20th-round picks.
He countered with swapping late picks in the late 12th and 16th rounds (I think that’s called gouging).
But, what the hey, we’re picking through the scraps now anyway. I’m not sure there will be a big difference in talent between those picks. So I’m got Jackson.
Since the start of this draft, there have been four trades. I have been involved in all four of them. (Prior to the draft, two franchises swapped all picks).

Incidentally, I'm sure you'll cover this in the mag, but what do you briefly think of the RB mess in D.C.? I find it intriguing that Shanahan signed Ryan Torain. He looked good in Denver before he was injured, and then showed nothing once he got into a regular-season game...

I will double-check, but I don't think Torain's name will even appear in the Washington story. That guy can't play. I saw him in the Cleveland game he started (it was a Thursday nighter on NFL Network -- also Brady Quinn's first start, I believe). Torain looked very much like a college back. When Shanahan wasn't in the league last year, Torain couldn't even latch on with a team. Maybe -- maybe -- he sneaks onto the Washington roster with the last roster spot, but I doubt it.
