The waiver wire in my dynasty league opened up this week. We had a three-round rookie draft two weeks ago, so the top rookies are already gone, and we have 26-man rosters -- there's not a lot of talent available out there.
Still, in the first three days there have been about 10-12 acquisitions -- players with minimal if any value in re-draft formats, but ones who might be available in your dynasty league. Here's the list, and some quick thoughts on each one.
1. Brandon Tate, Patriots. My pickup. What does New England have at receiver right now? Disgruntled Randy Moss. Injured Wes Welker. Slot guy Julian Edelman, special-teamer Sam Aiken, rookie Taylor Price. So I'm definitely interested in Tate, New England's third-rounder a year ago who was coming off a torn ACL or he'd have been drafted higher. Tate was hurt most of last season, but he could be in the mix for the No. 2 spot this season (and especially next, after Moss hits the road).
2. Harry Douglas, Falcons. Hey, another guy coming back from injury. He could work his way up to the No. 2 job in Atlanta; certainly Michael Jenkins is nothing special in that role. At worst he should be the team's No. 3 this year.
3. Marcus Easley, Bills. After No. 1 Lee Evans, Buffalo has Roscoe Parrish, James Hardy, and Steve Johnson at receiver. I'd say "Yikes," but I'm saving that for a review of the quarterback position. Johnson is the current favorite to start, but Easley, a fourth-rounder out of Connecticut, has an outside chance to crash the party. And by party of course I mean what figures to be the league's worst passing offense, but like I said, we've got deep rosters in this league.
4. Jordan Shipley, Bengals. Shipley's chances of making an impact this season are minimal, but the Bengals have a lot of nobody wideouts behind starters Chad Ochocinco and Antonio Bryant. The long-term opportunities are bright.
5. Jacoby Ford, Raiders. Ford was a pretty impressive all-purpose type of player at Clemson, but was overshadowed by a guy named C.J. Spiller. We get credit for return yards in this league, and Ford has a chance to make an impact there for Oakland right away. And oh yeah, they don't have much at receiver, either.
6. Tony Moeaki, Kansas City. Tight ends get a 1.5 points per reception in this league, so every guy with a pulse finds his way onto a roster, especially if they have a shot to start. Kansas City has nothing else at the position. I considered Moeaki but couldn't clear the spot for him.
7. Dennis Pitta, Ravens. See above. Baltimore's other rookie tight end, Ed Dickson, was selected in the rookie draft.
8. Tyrell Sutton, Panthers. This second-year runner is the third-string running back in Carolina, and he'll probably get a lot of work in the preseason with the guys ahead of him coming off surgeries and whatnot. He looked pretty good in limited action in the preseason in Green Bay last year, and also in Carolina.
9. Dennis Dixon, Steelers. I suppose Dixon might beat out Byron Leftwich to start while Ben Roethlisberger is busy paying his dues/growing a conscience. There are worse fliers to take.
10. Malcolm Kelly, Washington. Maybe the light will come on for Kelly this year. Stranger things have happened, and there are certainly opportunities to step up in Washington if Devin Thomas doesn't or if Santana Moss' hamstrings act up again.
