Entering the fantasy draft end game

Posted May. 29 at 12:51 PM

I’ve got five picks left in the Fanex draft. Four of them are spoken for – since it’s a no-moves league, I will take two defenses and two kickers.

If anybody has a recommendation for that final spot – that diamond-in-the-rough star that puts this team over the top – I’m all ears.

There is one 16-game quarterback left. Josh Freeman of the Bucs. He could add some depth behind Tony Romo and Vince Young. I am carrying three tailbacks – Mendenhall, Moreno and Spiller. I have obtained the second backs in Buffalo and Denver (Buckhalter and Fred Jackson), I could go for the third handcuff with Mewelde Moore.

Two good tight ends are there – Kevin Boss and Dustin Keller. I could go that route, figuring it would make me really good at tight end (I already have Jermichael Finley and Heath Miller, but on the weeks where two tight ends score, one could flop into the “flex” position).

Darris Heyward-Bey? He supposedly looks good at Oakland’s camp. If he hits an 80-yard touchdown, that’s a nice bonus in this league. Maybe he’ll wake up and be something this year.

There are a couple of decent high-upside backup tailbacks out there – most notably Javon Ringer and Bernard Scott.

Let me know if I’m missing anyone.

Fanex is an experts league that's been around since the mid-'90s. Participants include Matt Pitzer (USA Today), Mike Harmon (foxsports.com), Craig Davis (fantasyfootball.com), Tony Holm (fantasysharks.com) and others.

This is a no-moves, best-ball league. The automatically generated starting lineups include (among the usual) 3 WRs and one flex player that can be a RB, WR or TE. Scoring system includes 1 point per reception. There are no head-to-head games in this league; it's based strictly on the most points compiled over 17 weeks. Have you considered Brian Westbrook? Sure he doesn't have a team yet, but he should be able to carve himself a niche wherever he does sign. Clearly his receiving skills are a boon in this scoring format. Should a starter in front of him go down he could prove very useful. Fred Davis is another TE to consider. He was quite productive last year when Cooley went down. There is talk of Cooley and Davis being split out wide and used in the slot this season to maximize their abilities. With Santana's status somewhat in question I'd argue that those two are the most reliable targets in the Redskins offense. Josh Freeman you mentioned and that looks to be the safe play, and a potential lifesaver if either one of your other QB's misses any time.

Derrick Anderson has more upside than Freeman if he gets the job. Plus, he'll be better than Young if he gets the job. `At the risk of damaging any credibility I might have, Jason Campbell could be pretty good. At least they should pass more than Tennessee. Last year Philly reporters were talking about Ingram (Phila TE) like he was a superstar in waiting during training camp before he got hurt. And he is in a great system for TEs. I'm glad you got Finley.

How about Mike Thomas, WR, Jacksonville Without Holt, there is no reason why he couldn't be the #2 next year. And with injury prone MSW as #1...there is a decent chance that he could be the #1 for a few games. And opportunity isn't the only thing going for him. He was very solid why given the opportunity last year. He is excellent in the slot and was also used on reverses last year.

I like the Thomas suggestion. He looks like he could be a Davone Bess-type receiver who quietly catches 70 passes (50 of them hitch passes for 8 yards). That type of receiver is valuable in a PPR format. Right now, though, I'm thinking I'll probably go with Mewelde Moore, giving me the 1-2 backs for Pittsburgh, Denver and Buffalo -- nailing down that I'll always have a pair of running backs who are at least playing. But I could still change my mind.

I really like the idea of taking Ringer. I have him in two drafts, one as a hand cuff to CJ and another as a move to block a CJ owner from drafting him. I think it is a sound defensive strategy. Not to mention he is very tough kid with huge upside on a run first team and had a great college career.
