Around the NFL
Jerome Harrison had a 286-yard rushing performance late last year, but that didn't stop Cleveland from trading up in the second round to select Montario Hardesty. Thus far, it sounds like they're pleased with the pick.
"Montario has had a really outstanding camp," Eric Mangini said yesterday. "For a young guy, he makes very few mistakes. That's going to give him the best chance to not only play, but to play a lot if he continues along this path."
Harrison is a restricted free agent who hasn't yet signed his tender, and he skipped the first week of OTAs. But he's in attendance now, and it's certainly possible that Hardesty's performance early was a factor.
The Browns have a lot of running backs, including second-year backs James Davis and Chris Jennings, plus former Bronco Peyton Hillis. One of those guys might very well step up in the preseason, or else the team could employ a crowded committee in which none of the backs on the roster are good fantasy options.
Long-term, though, Hardesty looks like a player to keep an eye on. Assuming he can stay healthy (injuries were a problem in college), he might have the best skill set to be an NFL starter.
