Grading the Fanex teams

Posted Jun. 06 at 10:08 AM

We wrapped up the Fanex experts draft. Tight end Benjamin Watson goes down as Mr. Irrelevant.

I am not, however, ever quite sure how to grade sure a draft.

Do you look at the projected starting 10 for each team? Do you look at all 20 guys on each roster? Maybe partial credit for reserves? How do you account for it being a best-ball format?

By my calculations, the best of the other 11 teams belongs to Matt Pitzer of USA Today. When I add up the projected points (using my stat projections), he has the most overall firepower – that’s when I total up about the top 18 guys on each roster, using some voodoo math to account for outliers who did not select two kickers or two defenses (I’m not sure how much those guys should be penalized). Using that scoring system, he’s followed closely by Tony Holm of Fantasy Sharks.

Using a tighter scoring system, in which I looked at only one quarterback, one kicker, one defense, one tight end and a combined seven running backs and wide receivers, Pitzer again comes out on top. In that one, Michael Nazarek of Fantasy Football Mastermind comes in next, followed by Holm, then Craig Davis (fantasyfootball.com).

My own team (no surprise, since I’m grading using my own stat projections) comes in first in both system. But that’s to be expected – any of the other experts following the same procedure no doubt would also conclude their own team was the best.

The wrapup grades and observations of the other participants in this league should be posted no later than Tuesday.

2010 FANEX DRAFT

Fanex is an experts league that's been around since the mid-'90s. Participants include Matt Pitzer (USA Today), Mike Harmon (foxsports.com), Craig Davis (fantasyfootball.com), Tony Holm (fantasysharks.com) and others.

This is a no-moves, best-ball league. The automatically generated starting lineups include (among the usual) 3 WRs and one flex player that can be a RB, WR or TE. Scoring system includes 1 point per reception. There are no head-to-head games in this league; it's based strictly on the most points compiled over 17 weeks.
