Surprises from the preseason annual

Posted Jun. 06 at 10:37 PM

We put the magazine to bed this weekend, which means before long you'll be seeing copies of the issue in your mailbox (you can order it right here) or your local Barnes and Noble. As always, there were a few surprises -- nothing of the level of Tatum Bell, I don't think, but certainly some unexpected developments.

The following list includes 10 such items. Half are real, half aren't. See if you can guess which are which. Answers below.

1. Experts leave Ben Roethlisberger out of their top 20 quarterbacks.
2. Ben Tate 3rd among Houston running backs.
3. Chris Chambers ranked ahead of Dwayne Bowe.
4. Aaron Rodgers goes No. 1 overall in the mock draft.
5. Jets defense ranked outside the top 5.
6. Larry Fitzgerald not a top-10 wideout.
7. Michael Bush and Reggie Bush have near identical value.
8. Maurice Jones-Drew more expensive than Chris Johnson in mock auction.
9. Devin Aromashodu the top Chicago wideout.
10. Andy's back page column has something to do with Brett Favre.

Made your guesses? Here are the answers.

1. True. Roethlisberger finished 23rd. It's largely due to our Expert Poll scoring system, which strongly favors players who play 16 games. Roethlisberger, of course, will miss at least 4.

2. True. Tate appears to have a one-in-three chance of starting the most games for Houston this year, but we're putting him slightly behind Arian Foster and Steve Slaton for now. That could change at some point in the preseason, but a hamstring injury has him with some catching up to do.

3. True. Chambers had a better rapport with Matt Cassel down the stretch, and got a big contract in the offseason. Bowe isn't a favorite of the coaching staff.

4. False. He was, however, taken at No. 4, and was the top quarterback selected.

5. False. They were 5th, which is still lower than you'll see them most anywhere. They may well be a great NFL defense, but they were last year -- and weren't a top-10 fantasy group.

6. False. Fitzgerald is 9th, which is still lower than you might expect. Arizona's offense will be different with Matt Leinart running it.

7. True. At least in our yardage rankings, they're ranked consecutively. Reggie Bush is higher in both PPR and TD-only rankings.

8. False. They went for the same price, $52, a dollar less than Adrian Peterson.

9. False. He's No. 3, trailing both Johnny Knox and Devin Hester.

10. True. But not much, I promise.

If I did as well in school as I did on your test, I wouldn't have graduated. The test is just a reminder of why I continue to subscribe.
