Around the NFL
Cute story out of Bellevue, Wash., where Seahawks rookie Golden Tate got caught stealing some maple bars from a local bakery. I'm amused by the way that the team is trying to spin it.
Coach Pete Carroll tries to use a combination of humor and fact-bending. He implies there might have been some question of whether the bakery was open, which is simply ridiculous -- their hours are 7 am to 7 pm, and the donuts were grabbed around 3 am in the morning.
"I'm not disappointed in a guy being in a doughnut shop when they've got maple bars like Top Pot has," Carroll said. "However, under the circumstances I think they were closed or they were trying to close or something like that. So that's definitely one. We talked about it, and he's most remorseful about it and all that. I do understand the allure of the maple bars."
And Tate, adjusting to NFL stardom already, tries to blame the incident on a friend.
"A buddy made the mistake of going in, grabbing a couple," Tate said. "We ate them. Nothing much to the story other than that."
The story appears in The Seattle Times.
