Factoid
As we've noted before, following the sacks is a pretty good rule of thumb with fantasy defenses. Teams that can be counted on to come up with high sack totals tend to do favorably in terms of forcing turnovers and defensive touchdowns.
Over the last decade, NFL teams have recorded 40 or more sacks in a season 108 times, or an average of 11 times per year. Three teams -- the Dolphins, Giants and Eagles -- have led the way by reaching that total 7 times in the last 10 years. At the other end of the spectrum? Detroit and Houston. They haven't done it even once.
The number of 40-sack seasons per team over the last 10 years, including their average sack totals in that span, are presented below. Keep in mind, significant personnel changes in recent years -- Minnesota adding Jared Allen, and Carolina losing Julius Peppers -- aren't accurately reflected in those decade-long numbers.
