Washington and Haynesworth divorce inevitable now

Posted Jun. 17 at 03:01 AM

There were hints way back when Washington's switch to a 3-4 defense occurred. Albert Haynesworth wasn't going to be happy in it, and Washington wasn't going to be happy with him in it. He's not built to play nose tackle, and he's not a great fit (especially financially) as an end in that defense.

As this article in the Washington Post makes clear, it's definitely over now. Shanahan and his Washington teammates have washed their hands of the $100 million defender. The only thing left to be determined is how much of his contract the team might be able to reclaim when the two sides part ways.

That said, it's certain that Haynesworth will play somewhere this year. How about Detroit, where head coach Jim Schwartz used to run a defense that got Haynesworth his huge contract in Tennessee. The Lions could put him next to top pick Ndamukong Suh in their 4-3 defense and suddenly not look quite as hopeless as they have the past few years. Or perhaps Tennessee.

After London Fletcher's harsh criticism of him -- "he can't be depended on...it's all about him" -- it's clear it will not be Washington.
