Around the NFL
Wes Welker, who tore his ACL in week 17, was out doing individual drills during the Patriots' offseason training activities a couple of weeks ago. That stirred talk he might actually be ready for the start of the season.
Time to ratchet back those expectations a little. As Mike Reiss' AFC East blog at ESPN makes clear, Welker still appears unlikely to be on the field in September.
In a TV interview, Belichick said this of Welker: "He's on schedule. Hopefully with no setbacks, he'll have an opportunity to get out there and compete at some point this year." Belichick has been known to play fast and loose with injury updates, but regardless; that doesn't sound overly optimistic.
Reiss' "educated guess" is that Welker will open the season on the PUP list, thus missing at least the first six weeks of the regular season.
