Carolina's Steve Smith broke his arm over the weekend, which will cost him all of training camp. The two month or so recovery time should have him ready for the start of the season. Should.
Because it's the same arm he broke at the end of last season (although a different spot), the team is concerned the recovery time might be longer, according to a story in the Charlotte Observer. The story says that the earliest Smith could return appears to be the season opener.
Smith's agent says what you'd expect -- "Anyone who knows Steve knows that he's going to come back stronger, faster, meaner and more ready to play than before" -- but also notes that the location of the plate from last year's injury might have been a factor in the latest injury.
In some respects, maybe it's fortunate Smith got hurt now. If the previous injury made him more susceptible to this one, better it happen in June than during an exhibition game in late August.
But even if we assume Smith will be ready for week 1, it's a concern that he's broken the same arm twice since December. Smith's a tough guy and plays hard, and that won't change even after this injury. If he can get hurt playing flag football, what will it be like when the real games begin?
It's safe to say this injury will have Smith slipping behind his Giants' namesake most drafts this year.

I'll still take Mr. Carolina before Mr. NY. I can get him cheaper now.
