Favre indecisive. Or is he?

Posted Jun. 24 at 10:16 PM

Brett Favre gave an interview with Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun Herald yesterday, in which he dropped hints of a return to football. Or didn't. Really, it can be interpreted either way, for those that have their doubts.

"I would love to go beat the Saints," said Favre -- coincidentally, Minnesota's week 1 opponent. Sounds like he's going to play! But then he adds, "But what if that doesn't happen?" Sounds like he realizes the odds of improving on last season are remote.

Odds are, Favre plays. The guy had ankle surgery, in just enough time to be fully recovered by the middle of the exhibition season -- when he reported to the team last year. If he announces a return now, he'll draw criticism for skipping training camp. So he continues to hem and haw, at least publicly, and that doesn't happen. At least, not as much.

One interesting take from Favre is that he mentions the Vikings' decision to pass on Jimmy Clausen as an endorsement of the quarterbacks currently on the roster, Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. Minnesota passed on Clausen both at the end of the first round (when they traded down) and the beginning of the second.

Some of us, of course, took Minnesota's apparent lack of interest in a quarterback as an acknowledgment that Favre was likely to return for another season. (Or simply not liking Clausen.)

Minnesota's first preseason game is August 14th. Look for Brad Childress to be picking Favre up at the airport around August 17th.
