Around the NFL
Pittsburgh right tackle Willie Colon is likely out for the season after injuring his Achilles tendon. The injury occurred at a workout today.
The Steelers would like to rely more on the run this season, and Colon is a big part of their plans. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review calls Colon one of the team's best run blockers.
With Ben Roethlisberger suspended for at least the first month of the season, Pittsburgh would like to give Rashard Mendenhall more carries. But this makes it less likely that they'll be able to really get him going. The team has a lesser offensive line and doesn't have much behind Colin. Trai Essex should become a starter.
The injury also should result in lesser pass protection for Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich (who should begin the season as the starting quarterback). Roethlisberger already has a tendency to hang onto the ball a long time, waiting for plays to develop; he could be sacked far too often.
