Potential trouble for Bengals running back Cedric Benson. He's been arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault, accused of punching a man at a bar in Texas.
The incident occurred a month ago, according to a story by The Associated Press. But charges weren't filed until today.
Benson has been a good soldier since the Bengals signed him in September 2008. He was involved in two off-field incidents involving alcohol earlier that year -- one on a boat and one driving a car. That prompted the Bears to release him prior to training camp.
This incident is unlikely to result in Benson being suspended by the league. Possible, but unlikely. He's had a few other issues, so that might be enough to trigger some kind of league discipline.
If Benson is forced to sit down for any game, it would make Bernard Scott an appealing option as a fill-in starter.
More likely, this incident won't really affect Benson's standing with the team. Maybe it will make the team slightly more cautious when negotiating his next contract.
But this whole incident could be forgotten within a matter of weeks. And whether Benson did much of anything remains to be seen.
"Though he does not entirely agree with the version of facts recited in the court filings, he does not wish to make his comments public at this time," says Benson's attorney, Sam Bassett.
