Why have the Chargers been so unwilling to give a new contract to star wide receiver Vincent Jackson? Perhaps it's because the pending suspension that has generally been perceived to be "a game or two" is in fact expected to be the first quarter of the season.
Yes, just like Santonio Holmes (who the Steelers gave away for just a fifth-round pick), Vincent Jackson is expecting to be suspended for four games to start the season. That's the story according to ProFootballTalk.com.
If so, it's a lot less surprising that San Diego isn't willing to approach Jackson's reported demands for a Brandon Marshall-like contract. It's also a sign that the rumors of San Diego being willing to trade him away are plenty valid, 'cause that's what teams tend to do when a guy wears out his welcome with them. Like Santonio Holmes.
You have to think that San Diego will be looking for not only a decent pick (although the four-game suspension report will make that tougher) but also a startable wide receiver. A trio of Malcom Floyd, Legedu Naanee and Craig Davis is not exactly scary.
I think it's reasonable to give Antonio Gates a little bump, too. Philip Rivers may be forced to lean on his tight end more than he otherwise would have, if Jackson is indeed on his way out of town.
