Around the NFL
Although a shooting at his birthday party appeared to cast Michael Vick's NFL future (and at least his Eagles' future) in doubt, for now there appears to be a good chance Vick will remain an Eagle for the foreseeable future. That's the indication from the Eagles, anyway.
When they disputed a report that they were considering releasing him last week, it was easy to take it as an effort to maintain some minimal trade value. But as this article makes clear, an Eagles source says there doesn't appear to be much worry that Vick did anything wrong.
According to the investigation, Vick wasn't there when the shooting occurred, and won't face any charges; the case is considered closed. It looks like the only concern is Vick getting in trouble for being in the presence of the person who was shot -- his cousin -- prior to the incident. But as of yet, that hasn't happened.
So maybe Vick (sorry) dodged a bullet here. He should remain with the Eagles as Kevin Kolb's backup, and will probably come in to vulture some touchdown opportunities as a Wildcat quarterback around the goal line. And if Kolb gets hurt, well, Vick will have some pretty nice receivers to throw to.

I see that Howard Eskin of Philadelphia's sports radio station, WIP, says that the Eagles are sniffing around Troy Smith (who's no longer in Baltimore's plans). If the team adds Smith, I think it's a safe bet they release Vick shortly afterwards.

I had seen that about Smith but thought it was a backup plan (if Vick were suspended or jailed). Not that teams haven't eaten larger sums of money, but they did pay Vick a $1.5 million bonus in March. I think he'll need to be suspended before they simply cut him.
