Ravens are slipping

Posted Jul. 30 at 03:18 AM

A few weeks back, I considered the Ravens the favorites to win the Super Bowl. They added Anquan Boldin, and I think Joe Flacco will take a step forward this year.

But I think I'm ready to bail on them now. Not that they won't be a good team, but their defense seems to be slipping. Ed Reed probably will miss the first third of the season and is getting old anyway. And now cornerback Domonique Foxworth is out for the season after tearing his ACL without even being touched.

You can't win without having a good pass defense, and I just don't think it's there for the Ravens now. Maybe they edge Cincinnati and Pittsburgh for the AFC North title, but I don't think it's certain.

Remember how bad their pass defense was a few years ago when it was riddled with injuries? In particularly, I remember Ben Roethlisberger throwing 5 TDs in a half against them in a Monday night game.

Well you have to remember too that offensive players seem to take the better part of a year to adjust to a new team and its easier for a defensive player to hit their stride quickly simply because the playbook for an offensive player is so big. I don't think Boldin is going to be as big of a monster as all the hype has him being. People who draft him thinking he'll tear it up are going to be dissapointed much like those last year who jumped on the Cutler bandwagon.

In order to contend, the Ravens need moderate improvement from the offense and major improvement in the defensive pash rush. If that happens, and the secondary can survive waiting for Washington, Webb, and Reed to return, they will be in good shape for the second half of the season... ... and like all teams, hope to avoid any other serious injuries - which is a crapshoot
