Dumervil injury huge for Broncos

Posted Aug. 05 at 09:52 PM

In yesterday's update we put forth the idea that no player was more important to his defense than Darrelle Revis. Denver's Elvis Dumervil, who led the league with 17 sacks last season, was probably in the top 5.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, Dumervil is likely done for the season after reportedly tearing a pectoral muscle in practice. We say "likely" and "reportedly" because Josh McDaniels comes from the Patriots school of treating every injury like it's a state secret; he's not even confirming the muscle is torn at this point. But that's the likely answer.

Without Dumervil, Denver will be hurting to find a pass rush this season. Former first-round pick Jarvis Moss is one possibility, just not a particularly exciting one. After Dumervil, Denver's next leading player in sacks a year ago was Vonnie Holliday, now in Washington, with 5.

Denver wasn't likely to crack our top 10 defenses this year regardless, but they played like it for a little while last season, with Dumervil the primary reason why. Now it's far less likely they'll be in our top 20 when next week's rankings come out.

Good news for offenses with the Broncos on their schedule, and good news from Denver's skill position players, which should find themselves involved in plenty of shootouts.
