Money where our mouth is in experts draft

Posted Aug. 07 at 11:35 PM

I'm participating in an extended-format experts draft right now, with 11 other fantasy writers/web site owners. We're two rounds in, and thus far I'm toeing the Fantasy Index line.

Picking 12th, all the top running backs are gone when my pick came up. It's a PPR scoring format, and TD passes are worth 6 points, so my picks were pretty easy. We've got Drew Brees as the top quarterback and Brandon Marshall as the 2nd-ranked wide receiver in this format, so those were my picks. Both are top-8 players on our board; given the 6-point TD passes, you could make a case for Brees as the top player overall, certainly top 5.

Making these picks, it's clear I'm going to be behind the 8-ball at running back, since I won't take my first one any earlier than pick 36. Pickings will be slim at that point. But I couldn't justify taking Rashard Mendenhall, as a for instance, at No. 12 or 13 overall. So instead I went with an elite QB and WR, and hopefully I'll patch together a running game later.

The league is sponsored by Junkyard Jake, and it's in its 4th year of existence. I've done pretty well in this league; in 2007, I drafted Tom Brady late in the second round, and his 50-TD season helped propel me to the regular-season points title. Alas, I lost in the playoffs when he went TD-less against the Jets in week 15. I've also lost in the playoffs each of the last two years. Just call me the Eagles.

You can see the entire draft, which is moving at a sluggish rate of about a round a day, right here.

I'm in a similiar league QB td=6 and PPR. It's third round reversal. I'm hoping I can get the 12th slot and get the 12th, 13th, and 25th pick. Doing mock drafts I can usually get 3 80-100 reception WRs. I plan to burry 'em with receptions. I'll go with Hightower and his receptions later on. I'll go with Kolb or Eli Manning at QB. I've seen Eli predicted to get 30 TD passes. If so, how much more can the top QBs be worth than Eli? Rothlisburger isn't even being drafted. He'll be a cheap backup.
