Fantasy News
Here’s another mock draft to ponder. This is the Fanex experts league – a 24-team competition (with the teams separated into two 12-team leagues).
Normally in these Fanex deals, I send out a bunch of e-mails and methodically trade down, picking up extra choices in the middle rounds. But I decided to not go that route this time. I drew the 10th pick (which isn’t as desirable to move), and I’ve also been busy. So I decided to stay in my spot (and nobody has sent me any trade offers).
This is a PPR league, and you can start up to 4 WRs, so I concentrated on that position early – Brandon Marshall, Miles Austin and Wes Welker. Then I selected Tony Romo when he was still available at 4.03. I would have liked to wait longer on a quarterback, but I felt Romo was just too good of a value there to let go.
So where does that leave me at running back? C.J. Spiller at 5.10. I think he’ll be fine; this is a PPR format, and I think he’ll catch plenty of passes. And then I went with Clinton Portis at 6.03.
Does this make sense? According to my math, it does – at least for now. Taking two receivers with the first two picks, then Spiller and Portis, according to my projections, adds up to 912 fantasy points. Had I gone with running backs with my first two picks, then selected wide receivers with 5.10 and 6.03, that would have been worth 901 fantasy points. That foursome, I figure, would be Rashard Mendenhall, DeAngelo Williams, Hines Ward and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

A wise move at #10 to go with stud receivers early. I believe Fitz, Wayne and Moss were selected too early, leaving Austin for you in Round 2. Welker will be healthy, so a Round 3 steal in a PPR format. I think you admit, however, you got a little lucky getting two servicable RBs as late as you did. And with TEs so deep this year, presumably you did okay there in the later rounds (but who cares if not -- yours WRs will carry your squad).

That actually seems to be about where spiller goes... I've taken him there or a few picks later in a couple of recent drafts (also PPR). Portis is similar...people are avoiding him (more than they should I think...)

I'd have to go with a top QB before I went with a top WR

Welker? HUGE health risk, no?
