Fanex: so far, so good

Posted Aug. 18 at 03:06 PM

A couple of thoughts on the ongoing Fanex Draft. (This is the 20-rounder that will take about two weeks – each team has 18 hours when it’s on the clock).

This is the draft where I didn’t take any running backs in the first five rounds. I’m fine with that. You can start three wide receivers, plus a wide receiver flex, and with it being a PPR format, I think that’s where the value is. My first two running backs were C.J. Spiller and Clinton Portis. A couple of rounds back, I insured the Portis pick with Larry Johnson. Now, in rounds 13 and 14, I’ve added a couple of high-upside backups. Bernard Scott and Javon Ringer. Hardly household names, but I expect to get a few big games out of those guys.

Can this kind of against-the-grain approach work? My numbers say yes. According to my projections, when you take the top quarterback on each team and add the production of the top 9 RB-WR-TE on each roster, I’ve got a 100-point cushion against every other team in the league. So things are going fine.

Everyone will draft kickers, defenses and a few more backups in the remaining six rounds, but the meat of this draft is over. I expect a playoff berth (top 4 of 12 teams) for an eighth year in a row. We’ll see though; that’s why they play the game.

FANEX: PROJECTED POINTS SO FAR
Totals of each team’s top quarterback and top 9 RB-WR-TE; in reality, each team starts 7 of those players, but with injuries and byes, some depth is needed for success. Not included yet: kickers and defenses.

So given your selection of him in the 3rd round I take it you aren't in the least bit concerned about the health of Welker. There is simply no way he will be as explosive this season as he was before his knee injury. Less explosion less separation less receptions. No matter how fast of a healer Welker is, 9 months is not enough to be fully recuperated from such a devastating knee injury. You also had to figure that few teams, if any, had him ranked as highly as you did. That factored in with the possibility of re-injury or a setback and that seemed like an awfully unwise pick. I love your strategy and rationale for drafting, but this looks a bit like a case of you chasing last years stats. Would it not have behooved you to take Romo with your 3rd pick and then select JerMichael Finley with your 4th giving you a positional advantage at TE? Then you could gamble on Welker falling to your 5th selection and get better value on him, or grab the RB's like you did. Has Welker distanced himself that much from guys like Ward and Nicks that you felt compelled to select him as high as you did? Great work as usual Ian, but that pick really is a headscratcher to me.

There's risk involved with Welker, certainly. But this is a PPR format, so those guys who catch 100 passes are extremely valuable. That's why I made that gamble. I figured I'd insure that pick later with Julian Edelman, but he went way earlier than I anticipated. If I knew I wouldn't get Edelman, I would have preferred to have selected Jermichael Finley. I'll agree with you that it was the much safer route to go.

I figured there had to be more than meets the eye with that selection. Thank you for explaining.
