Overall player rankings now included with custom rankings

Posted Aug. 20 at 12:09 PM

If you need a complete top-to-bottom list of rankings -- for instance, if you're trying to set up a robot draft on Yahoo or ESPN, and you want to see how the players rank when all the positions are mixed together -- then be sure to use the custom rankings module, which now includes a top-to-bottom overall list. But don't blindly draft from the list -- be sure you understand how the rankings are generated, or they may hurt you more than they help.

In order to generate a useful list of overall rankings, we need to know some things about your league. In particular, we need to know how many teams are competing, and how many players will be chosen in your draft (and at which positions). Overall rankings that don’t take these factors into consideration -- the kind of overall rankings provided by many of our competitors -- can hurt your team more than they help. For instance, there's no rush to draft a quarterback in an 8-team league. But in a 14-team league in which each team starts two quarterbacks, they're solid gold.

Our default overall rankings make some assumptions about your league. The computer assumes your league has 12 teams, and that starting lineups include 1 quarterback, 2 running backs, 2-3 wide receivers 1 tight end, 1 kicker and 1 defense.

The computer doesn't sort the players according to expected fantasy points Instead, it looks at the difference in projected fantasy points between any given player and the last player expected to be drafted at his position. We care only about the difference between a given player and a replacement who can be obtained for free.

You can fine-tune the overall rankings by adjusting the auction values section at the bottom of your custom scoring profile -- even though your league does not use a salary cap. The auction generator is necessary to weigh the positions relative to each other. You can (and should) adjust the number of players you expect to be drafted at each position. By tinkering with the number of players who will be paid more/less than the minimum salary, you can adjust the rankings to account for quarterbacks or running backs being more (or less) coveted in your league.
