Around the NFL
Think noted waffler Brett Favre is having any second thoughts (or seventh, or eighth...) right now? First Percy Harvin goes to the hospital, then Adrian Peterson misses a block that gets him planted into the turf. Now it appears his top target from last season, Sidney Rice, will be going under the knife.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Judd Zulgad, Rice could miss the first half of the season due to a lingering hip injury. Zulgad says Rice is expected to have surgery, which apparently two doctors recommended he have done months ago.
Rice's loss for any length of time is a huge blow to Favre and the team's passing offense, although it's an obvious boon to Bernard Berrian, who has plenty of talent himself. It probably means more running, as well, which should benefit Adrian Peterson.
But it's quite a blow to those who have already drafted and used an early pick on Rice, who by all accounts figured to be ready when the games counted. And it's bad news for Favre and the Vikings' hopes to make another deep playoff run.
By the way, the Vikings are reportedly going to sign Javon Walker, which might be tempting to those who remember Walker's best season way back when -- in Green Bay with Favre. The thing is, knee troubles have derailed Walker's career, plus there was no love lost between him and Favre after a holdout, war of words, and Walker's injury and then trade to Denver. Walker definitely won't start over Berrian or Harvin, and is probably a shell of the player he once was.
